10 tips to reduce stress




Stress can affect anyone and it’s not just a disease, reserved for the high flying bankers and stock brokers of the world, stress can affect you too. You can become stressed about your exam results at school, just as easily, as you can become stressed about the price of the shares in your investment portfolio falling, but everyone can combat stress by taking on board a few simple tips and learning how to relax, here’s just a few of the ways to reduce stress and start feeling good about yourself:

1. Cut down on the coffee

Caffeine has been called the most widely available and used drug in the world and that’s for a good reason. It raises your blood pressure and increases the production of adrenaline, a stress, increasing hormone, which only makes things feel worse. When left to its own devices, the body has its own mechanisms to help you cope with stress, but caffeine inhibits that natural process and leaves you in an agitated state for longer. Try cutting down on caffeine by replacing one cup of regular coffee at a time with decaffeinated coffee or a herbal tea as an alternative. You won’t notice the difference in alertness, but you will notice the calming effect that it has.

2. Listen to relaxing music

One of the easiest ways to reduce stress is to listen to relaxing and soothing music. If you’re having a really stressed out moment, then take a break and listen to some good and relaxing tunes. Studies have shown that soothing music has a distinct positive effect on the brain. It can reduce your blood pressure, as well as reduce the levels of the hormone, cortisol, which is linked to stress. Listening to sooting and relaxing music, combined with meditation, yoga or Tai Chi is almost a guaranteed way out of anxiety.

3. Meditation and aromatherapy

You can use one of these two anti-stress ingredients combined or try them separately. Mediation is a well known way to balance your body and relief stress; aromatherapy with the use of natural essential oils, such as lavender, lemon, orange, linalool, patchouli, rose, sandalwood or frankincense essential oils, can also help you reduce stress and start to feel better after a hectic and difficult day.


4. Phone a friend when you are feeling stressed

You don’t have to tell your friend that you are feeling stressed, but talking to a good friend will help to calm you down. If nothing else, it takes your mind off the things that are making you feel stressed, but a friendly voice will also give you a sense of reassurance and help to bring you back down to the ground.

5. Take a deep breath

One of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce stress is to simply take a deep breath. We’ve all heard this one before, but very few of us actually practice it. There is some medical science behind the belief that taking a deep breath will calm you down. Shallow breathing is not just a symptom of stress, it can actually cause stress; so try to sit back and take deep, slow breaths; it will oxygenate your blood, which will help clear your mind and allow you to focus better.

6. Take some time out

One of the most effective treatments for stress is to make sure that you get enough rest. Make sure that you set aside time during the course of the day for a rest and give your body and your mind a break. Working through lunch might impress your boss, but it won’t do you any good in the long run. Even a ten minute break every now and then will help you to keep the stress levels down.

7. Spend time in the sun

Spending time outdoors regularly is also one of the really good ways to reduce stress and anxiety naturally, so make sure to hit your local park often and spend more time in the sun, playing with your dog or doing yoga exercises.

8. Understand your own limits


Take on board the phrase ‘Life’s too short’ and understand your own limits. Constantly pushing yourself beyond your own limits might seem like an admirable trait, but ultimately, you will run out of steam and that is when stress sets in.

9. How to reduce stress? Learn to switch off

In our modern world of instant communication, the off switch has almost become a thing of the past, and that is possibly why stress is becoming more and more prevalent. Phone calls automatically re-routed, work emails forwarded to our smart phones, the pressure never stops. Learning to switch off is another easy way to reduce stress and start feeling good again. Set a time in the day to switch off, literally, and put your feet up to relax for a few hours. The world won’t stop turning, if you leave those messages until tomorrow and you’ll feel a whole lot better for it.

Spending quality time with your friends and family, with people you love, regularly, is one of the good and easiest ways to reduce stress and start feeling better. Whether you spend time around the table for a quiet dinner or you play a game together, this meaningful time will help you all feel good and get rid of stress.
